Samples of Woods From Around the World!
There's more to life than Oak.
There are thousands of different kinds of wood, each with subtle character and working properties which make it special.
Choosing the right wood for a particular design can make the difference between success and failure.
I only wish I could include them all. Bloodwood, Cocobolo Rosewood, Pink Ivory wood, Zebrawood...
Ba-Da-Ba-binga! Bubinga has nice golden undertones |
African Rosewood - as sweet by any other name
|
When you want Walnut but: a) Can't affort it b) need the light color of butternut |
![]() Carpethian Elm Burl - Highly prized cause it's drop-dead Gorgeous! |
![]() Black Cherry -Yes, It's nice, but a bit over-rated. It will darken severly over time, so you must design with that in mind. |
![]() Curly Maple - can be overwhelming, use with care. Stunning! |
Cypress is great for outdoor projects - Very decay resistant |
East Indian Rosewood - The real thing is hard to find these days. Can you imagine why? BEAUTIFUL! |
Your run-of-the-mill Mahogany. Great for many things, can get boring after a while |
![]() Knotty pine - Your house is built with this stuff. Must we see it in your furniture, too? Country, Schmuntry. This stuff is UGLY! |
![]() Maple - Hard maple is white and clean, little figure or depth, but often the right choice. |
Sapele is the wood, the figure is known as "mottled". Nice. Very Nice. |
![]() Olive Ash Burl - You'll only find this in veneer; this specimen does not reflect the true glory of a fine specimen. |
![]() Red Oak - Common, over-used, not a bad wood but let's give it a rest, huh? |
![]() Red Birch - Great when you can't afford Cherry. Patinas to a richer brown, a fine choice for cabinets or furniture. |
Pau Ferro - Another stunning rosewood. Gotta Love it. The picture is small 'cause it's hard to get! (hahahahah) |
Sapele - Also known as African Mahogany. A very classy look with some ribbon stripe figure |
![]() Teak - Honestly, really expensive and not too attractive. VERY decay resistant. Many marine uses. |
