A word about

Shellac

Shellac is made from the shells of the Lac Beetle, predominantly found in India.  The shells are dissolved in Alcohol, and when applied to wood produce a finish of stunning depth and beauty.  Unfortunately, the liquid form has a limited shelf life and so it must be prepared fresh before use for the best results.

Shellac has poor water and solvent resistance (the white rings on a table under a cold glass of water indicate your finish is shellac or wax) and is not as durable as polyurethane.
